Bikini vs Figure vs Wellness: Which Division Is Right for You — and What You'll Wear on Stage

Quick answer: In UK women's physique sport, Bikini rewards an hourglass shape with softer conditioning, Wellness rewards a noticeably more developed lower body with a bikini-style upper, and Figure rewards an overall muscular, V-tapered physique with sharper conditioning. Your division determines your training emphasis, your judging criteria and your suit — bikini and wellness wear small connectored two-pieces, while figure typically requires all-fabric bottoms with no connectors.

"Which class should I enter?" is the first question every new competitor faces, and it's worth getting right: entering the division that matches your natural structure means competing with your body rather than against it. Here's how the three main divisions differ — and because we're suit-makers, exactly what you'll wear in each.

Bikini: the gateway division

The physique. Bikini is the UK's most popular women's division and the usual starting point. Judges look for an hourglass or "S-shape": capped shoulders, a small waist, round full glutes and balanced legs — presented with a degree of softness. This is the crucial bit newcomers misread: bikini judges are not rewarding six-pack abs or visible striations; excessive leanness is marked down in favour of a smooth, feminine, conditioned look. If enough glute muscle is there, a slight glute-ham tie-in is favourable.

The presentation. Front and back poses with transitions, judged heavily on stage presence, confidence and polish. In tight call-outs, posing quality often decides the placing.

The suit. A small, embellished two-piece. The bottoms are the focal point: cut and coverage are chosen to maximise the waist-to-hip illusion and lift the glutes, within your federation's coverage rules. Tops are usually moulded or fabric triangles, often with crystallised connectors — which some federations mandate and others merely allow. That's why suit rules come after federation choice: compare [LINK → B3: PCA Bikini Rules] and [LINK → B4: 2Bros / NPC UK Suit Rules] to see how different two shows can be.

Bikini suits you if… you have (or are building) naturally strong glute and shoulder development, a defined waist, and you'd rather look like the best version of an athletic physique than a heavily muscled one.

Wellness: the fast-growing middle ground

The physique. Wellness arrived from South America via the NPC/IFBB and has exploded in the UK. Think of it as bikini's lower-body-dominant sibling: judges want a noticeably more developed lower body — quads, hamstrings and glutes carrying real muscle — paired with a bikini-like upper body. The overall look is athletic and powerful below the waist without figure-level upper-body mass.

The presentation. Similar posing structure to bikini, with poses angled to showcase the lower body.

The suit. Very close to bikini styling, but cut strategy changes: bottoms are shaped to frame quad sweep and glute fullness, and front-shape rules matter — some federations have specific preferences for wellness fronts and connector placement, and getting it wrong can cost points. Details in the federation guides: [LINK → B3] / [LINK → B4].

Wellness suits you if… your legs and glutes grow easily and outpace your upper body — the classic "squats built this" physique. Many competitors who feel "too muscular" for bikini in the lower body are actually ideal wellness athletes.

Figure: the step up in muscle and condition

The physique. Figure (called Bodyfitness in IFBB contexts) rewards an all-over muscular, symmetrical physique: wide lats creating a V-taper, developed shoulders, visible muscle separation and sharper conditioning than bikini or wellness — while retaining femininity. It's a genuine step up in both muscle and leanness.

The presentation. Quarter-turn poses that display the physique from all four sides, with the back pose — that V-taper — carrying real weight.

The suit. This is where suit rules change substantially: figure suits typically use all-fabric bottoms with no connectors and a fuller cut, with the sparkle worked into the fabric and crystal design rather than hardware. A bikini-division suit is usually non-compliant in figure, and vice versa — one more reason never to buy a suit before confirming your division.

Figure suits you if… you've built (or love building) significant all-round muscle, your back and shoulders respond well, and you enjoy pushing conditioning further than bikini requires.

How to actually choose

  1. Assess your structure honestly — or better, have an experienced coach do it. Shoulder-to-waist ratio, how your legs grow relative to your upper body, where muscle comes easily.

  2. Match the division to your body's tendencies, not to which class you find most glamorous on Instagram. The best division is the one your structure is already halfway to.

  3. Check the criteria of your specific federation — divisions vary in name and detail between UK federations, and some offer extra classes (bikini athletic, fit model, transformation, masters). Our federation-by-federation overview is in The Complete UK Competition Bikini Guide.

  4. Watch a show live before you commit. One afternoon in the audience teaches you more about the divisions than a month of reading.

And remember it isn't a lifetime contract: plenty of athletes debut in bikini and migrate to wellness or figure as their physique develops.

What each division means for your suit order

When you enquire with us, division is the second question after federation, because it drives everything: cut, coverage, connectors, cup style and embellishment strategy [ADJUST TO GEORGIA'S PROCESS]. FAQ

What's the main difference between bikini and wellness? Lower-body muscle. Wellness rewards significantly more quad, hamstring and glute development than bikini, with a similar upper body and similar suit styling.

Is figure harder than bikini? Not harder — different. Figure demands more overall muscle and sharper conditioning, which usually means more years of training, but bikini's softer criteria and posing polish are their own challenge.

Can I wear the same suit for bikini and figure? Almost never. Figure typically requires all-fabric, connector-free bottoms with fuller coverage; bikini suits are smaller and usually connectored. Confirm your division before ordering.

Which division is best for beginners in the UK? Bikini is the most common starting point, but "best" depends on your structure — a leg-dominant beginner may place better in wellness from day one.

Do all UK federations offer all three divisions? Most major ones now offer bikini, wellness and figure, but class names, height/age splits and criteria details vary — always read your specific federation's rules.
